Tonight marks the end of an era. For 29 years, Barbara Walters has been hosting the go-to Academy Awards pre-show, bringing her remarkable interview skills to bear on a handful of the night’s nominees. Tonight will be her last Oscar special, clearing the way for some new blood to step in next year.

Walters said she’s been boring people the last couple of years by repeatedly saying she should end the specials; this past fall, she finally decided to pull the plug. “With cable and entertainment shows, so many stars are all over the place,” Walters said. “The specials weren’t that special.”

Walters was asked if, in the age of the Internet, today’s stars are less mysterious while being paradoxically more guarded. “I think it’s harder for us to get the big stars and easier for them to go on an entertainment show, plug the movie and get out,” she said, adding, in a side reference to ‘Avatar,’ “I can’t interview 10 pale blue people.”

As a replacement,Josh is the perfect man for the job. He knows it too. He’s not afraid to call upon his extensive network of Hollywood players for advice on how to be the guy selected to step in for Walters.
