Rapper Lil Wayne is going to jail as part of a plea deal to avoid a longer term behind bars on gun charges.

He is about to join T.I. in the Big House. The Grammy-winning rapper pleaded guilty to attempted weapon possession in New York City on Thursday, and expects to receive a one-year jail sentence.

According to reports, Lil Wayne will plead guilty for his possession of a .40 caliber gun found on his bus in 2007. Lil Wayne was expected to protest his innocence, but an announcement by authorities that they were to confirm Lil Wayne’s DNA was found on the gun making the chances of a conviction far more likely, bought about the change.He could have potentially landed himself 3 ½ years to 15 years in jail.

This is not Lil’ Waynes first run-in with the law. Lil’ Wayne has been arrested twice for drug charges.

According to MTV, DJ Khaled said the following when asked about his thoughts about the “Lil’ Wayne going to jail” headlines: “He’s a brother and he’s helped so many people. He’s helped so many people, the public, [his] city. Musically, he’s helped other artists. He’s just a great person on the whole.”

Lil Wayne joins a long list of rappers who have faced or spent time in jail, a move that it nearly a right of passage in some parts of the industry.
